Abstract

This paper presents the methodology and the main results of the SIGTEBAL project “GIS for the design, management, analysis and planning of school routes in the Balearic Islands” financed by the Balearic Government to a team of the University of the Balearic Islands. It is an example of application of GIS to the field of transport (GIS-t). The SIGTEBAL begins with the design of a geographic data base of the regional road network from Majorca to which information corresponding to the system of school routes (stops, routes, schools, etc) is added. The process of planning routes is made from the implementation of diverse methods of optimization. The final aim has been the design and the implementation of a GIS application oriented to the technical staff of the Council of Education of the Balearic Government to facilitate the tasks of management of school routes.
