Abstract

Mark Z. Danielewski is one of the central American figures within the field of experimental print fiction. His authorship is characterized by typographic experiments, unconventional page layout, and multilayered narratives, as already demonstrated in his debut novel, the best-selling House of Leaves (2000). His other major works include the novella The Fifty Year Sword (2005), the novel Only Revolutions (2006), the book series The Familiar (2015–2017), and the children's book The Little Blue Kite (2019), all of which combine different genres, media, and modes of storytelling. Thus, in all of these works, Danielewski experiments with use of colored text, page layout, and typography in order to explore how visual and textual modes of representation may be combined in order to produce signification in literary works.
