Abstract

The chapter examines the Swedish translation of Harriet Martineau's Illustrations of Political Economy (1832-1834) and Poor Laws and Paupers Illustrated (1833-1834). The focus is on the publication process of two Swedish translations of ‘The Hill and the Valley’ (1832) from Illustrations of Political Economy and on the social context of the translation of ‘The Hamlets’ (1833) and ‘The Town’ (1834) from Poor Laws and Paupers Illustrated.
