N2 - Following increased efforts during the last decade to formulate mathematical models for the paper drying process, this paper presents a Modelica library, DryLib, which enables users to rapidly develop complex models of paper machine dryer sections. In addition, parameter optimization, model reduction and moisture control by means of Non-Linear Model Predictive Control is treated. These applications have in common that they are based on numerical optimization schemes. Since the nature of the particular optimization problem dictates the requirements of the numerical code, the paper also serves as an illustration of the need for flexibility in terms of i) means for the user to express optimization problems, ii) and choice of numerical algorithms.
