Abstract
The book is a general history of the Baltic Sea region, written from a dual historical perspective. The first is genetic, focusing on the development of the region, on periods of intense contacts and communications between the peoples and states bordering the Baltic Sea, and on period in which the sea was a dividing and closed area. The second historical perspectice is genealogical, focusing on how the same history is handled by Baltic Sea actors to create feelings of a regional community, alternatively feelings of non-community.
