Abstract
Research in the field of socio-economic analysis of antibiotic resistance is limited and needs to be developed. Such analyzes include calculating in-creased care costs and societal costs. According to the Swedish Public Health Authority’s calculations of future costs for antibiotic resistance, the number of cases detected in Sweden with notifiable resistance types will quadruple from 15.500 cases in 2016 to 70.000 cases in 2050. The total ac-cumulated costs are estimated at SEK 15.8 billion in 2050. In addition, there are costs for non-notifiable resistance. To control the development of resis-tance, behavior change and investment in care hygiene need to be taken. Global strategies to counteract antibiotic resistance also need to be imple-mented. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the economic consequences of a contagious disease will be discovered. Although there are differences, parallels can be drawn to future economic effects of antibiotic resistance.
