Abstract

A broad, distinctive material presentation is done, which is linked to some variables of psychological value, stating a research for the authenticity of Garborg in viewing him as well a symptom bearer as a symptom solver. An introduction to Garborg is meant to be an invitation, especially to those who are not so well acquainted with him as a person and a writer. Out from a period of about 110 years of Garborg research, I put some light on the most relevant material according to my own intention. The preliminary problem formulation (p 13) is dealing with the main title´s first words, the "Symptom Bearer" and the "Symptom Solver", accentuating the references that he is using to handle the trauma regarding his father´s destiny and his own experienced depression and nervousness. After discussing Garborg research this formulation is followed up with an expressed hypothesis (p 33), partly stressing the mentioned role as both "Symptom Bearer" and "Symptom Solver", partly making "room" for the three different strata throughout the story of his life, formulated as if a connection in between them should be possible: the symptomal, the functional, and the conception of life area, the last one including the classical positions as well as non-dogmatic philosophies of life positions. After presenting theoretical references and distinctions I make a precised formulation with an hypothesis (p 52). There I argue that it is analytical possible to uncover how the three strata are interacting, viewed as an ongoing interaction of values from one strata to another.
