Abstract
The study aims to establish the effectiveness of the Danish destination certification scheme – Destination 21. In order to accomplish this, an analytical framework, based upon current tourism and development theory, was constructed against which the scheme was tested. The analytical framework consists from three analyses examining the schemes framework, substance and applicability. It was found that the scheme has the necessary substance and framework to enable it to be a valuable tool for the promotion and furthering of the sustainable tourism concept.
The study includes a case study of the Island of Møn's role in the development of the scheme, in order to highlight aspects of the development process and future implementation issues. The transferability of destination schemes across regional levels such as the Baltic Sea region is also discussed.
