Abstract

"What lies hidden behind online ads for erotic services, or on streets
on the outskirts of cities, or in the downtown apartments used by
escorts? What is someone who buys sex risking? What can be done to
prevent human trafficking? What rights to sex workers have? Why is
it that Germany considers prostitution to be a service, while Sweden
punishes it as one of the most shameful forms of violence against
women? Controversial questions of social policy as well as
still-taboo issues around intimacy, against the backdrop of broader
problems of labour, freedom of choice, sexuality and power."

The book addresses the main issues raised by the sex industry in contemporary Europe. It includes a short chapter on the history of regulations and debates on prostitution in Europe since the Middle-Ages, a chapter on the experiences and motives of the subjects - those who sell and those who buy, a chapter on the existing policies on prostitution - classified according to 6 types -, and a chapter on the issue of trafficking.
