DescriptionWe provide methods for rapid and accurate quantification of size and shape of organisms.
In the 3D Lab we deal with different technologies for quantifying, analysing and visualising 3D complex phenotypes of both extant and extinct (fossils) organisms. Our focus are applications in the field of ecology, evolution and palaeontology. However, our technology can be used in a broader range of applications such as: medicine, anthropology, archaeology, geology, cultural heritage, engineering and design.
Equipment and resourcesArtec 3D Space Spider
The Artec 3D Space Spider is a handheld and (optionally) battery-powered scanner used for medium-sized objects (10—50 cm). It can be easily transported and used in the field. It provides with colour texture and features a resolution of 0.1 mm with accuracy up to 0.05 mm.
GOM ATOS I SO
The GOM ATOS I SO is an industrial optical 3D scanner mounted on a motorized mechanical harm and used in the lab for small sized objects (1-10 cm) with accuracy better than 0.005 mm.
We have a Windows 10 Pro based Super Micro workstation for 3D image analysis equipped with two quad-core Intel Xeon Gold CPUs, 256 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce TITAN Xp GPU and 32” 4K EIZO EV3237 display. We also have a licenced copy of Volume Graphics VGStudio MAX software.Small-scale Photogrammetry Platform
We have implemented our custom photogrammetry platform to 3D-scan small (5-150 mm) specimens with a high level of details. The platform is composed by a diffuse-light photo studio with automated turntable, a custom 3-axis focus-stacking system for pinned entomological specimens and a dedicated workstation.Turntable Photo Studio
The MODE360° Photo Composer is a professional diffuse LED light studio with a motorized turntable. Lights and turntable are controlled by the computer with a dedicated software. More info about the MODE360° Photo Composer at MODE360° website.
3-Axis Focus Stacking System
Our custom focus stacking system is designed for scan pinned entomological specimens (< 80 mm). A motorised 2-axis turntable rotate the specimen while a motorised macro rail moves the camera to capture depth-extended pictures. Computer-controlled motion is based on Cognisys StackShot and image acquisition use Canon camera, macro lenses and flashlights. You find more information at Cognisys StackShot's and Canon's websites.
We have an 18-cores Intel i9-9980XE computer with 128GB RAM and 2 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti GPUs dedicated to photogrammetry with the following software licenses:
