DescriptionFinEstBeAMS at the MAX IV 1.5 GeV storage ring is material- and atmospheric science beamline. It has two branchlines. One branch line is equipped with an end station for gas-phase targets and samples with high vapor pressure not suitable for ultra-high vacuum conditions (gas-phase endstation) and endstation for photoluminescence measurements (photoluminescence endstation – FinEstLUMI). Other branch line will be equipped with an end-station for ultra-high vacuum surface science studies (solid state endstation).
Equipment and resourcesMain equipment includes:
Elliptically polarizing undulator (EPU), 95.2 mm period, 26 periods, 14 mm minimal gap, 2.475 m magnetic length
Energy (wavelength) range
4.3 - 1300 eV (281 - 0.95 nm)
Collimating plane grating monochromator (cPGM) with 2 plain gratings (92 and 600 mm/l) and internally cooled plane mirror
Up to 1 x 10-4 ΔE/E (2.4 meV at 10 eV, 11.4 meV at 150 eV and 20-30 meV at 290 eV)
Beam size at sample
100 x 100 μm2 (horizontal x vertical), 20 x 30 μm2 when limiting exit slit and baffles, beam size can be increased by moving gas-phase endstation out of focus
Flux at the sample (focused)
8x1013 - 1011 ph/s (4.3 – 800 eV), 1011 ph/s (1000 eV in when EPU used as wiggler)

Main technique: Photoelectron Photoion Coincidence Spectroscopy (PEPICO)
Electron spectrometer R4000
Detector type: Quantar Inc. model 3395A.
• 40mm active area MCP detector, 3 MCP stack.
• Spatial resolution 400 elements (0.10mm).
• Position analyzer: Quantar Inc. type 2401B, options EJ, EB.
• 10 bit ADC converter and XY analog position outputs, digital and analog strobe.
• VETO gating possibility.
• 4 micros dead time/event.
Ion Time-of-Flight detector system:
• Detector type: RoentDek GmbH 75mm active area MCP and HEX-anode delay line.
• Multi-hit capability (0 ns dead time).
• 8-channel fast preamp unit with 55X (+/-10% adjustable) gain.
• 2 ADC digitizer cards (PCIe bus), each with 4 ADC channels (1.25 GSamples/s, 10 bit).
• Channels can be interleaved for 5 GSamples/s recording of a single trace.
• 2x4kV HV power supply system.
Main technique: Photoluminescence spectroscopy (PLS)
• A closed-cycle helium cryosystem (Advanced Research Systems). Temperature adjustable between 6 and 400 K
• Sample holder with space for up to 50 samples
• Fiber optics connection to the external Andor Shamrock (330i) 0.3 m UV/visible spectrometer. Three gratings available (300 l/mm, 300 nm blaze, 300 l/mm, 500 nm blaze, 1200 l/mm, 300 nm blaze). Detection with the Newton Andor CCD or PMTs on the second exit port. Covers 200-1500 nm range, max resolution 0.1 nm.
• Secondary VUV monochromator (0.4 m, 1650 l/mm, 0.6 nm resolution) covers 50-300 nm
• The set of photodiodes for the control the flux of the beam.
• The set of the filters (both solid state and gas phase) for suppressing higher order excitation.
Beamline has lead hutch, traverse crane and control room.
Services providedUser support during beam time; FinEstBeAMS will support PEPICO, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, TOF, PLS systems
Management of the infrastructureThe beamline is headed by a beamline scientist, time for experiments is allocated through a peer review process by an external program advisory committee. The scientific scope of the beamline is defined in interaction with the management of MAX IV Laboratory and the Scientific Advisory Committee.
