Research

I study binary stars which consist of a white dwarf and a neutron star. These binaries come into contact due to the emission of gravitational waves. The material starts being transferred from the white dwarf to the neutron star. Depending on the mass of the white dwarf, this leads to a highly energetic merger event or to stable long-lived mass transferring systems.

In my first project I ran hydrodynamic simulations of mass transfer in these systems to determine which of them survive the onset of mass transfer and how we observe them. We conclude that more systems should be merging that thought previously.

In my second project we explore the consequences of this for populations of white dwarf-neutron star binaries in dense stellar populations called globular clusters.

Teaching

During my doctoral studies I have done teaching in more than ten different courses in Astronomy (Stellar Structure, Computational Astrophyics, Introduction to Astrophysics, ...), Theoretical Physics (General Relativity, Mathematical Methods) and General Physics (Thermodynamics, Waves and Optics). The teaching was done both in Swedish and English on a number of different levels (labs, exercises, lectures, observations).
