Research

I currently work as a postdoc in Research Policy in the project Värdet av centrumsatsningar (The Value of Centre of Excellence Initiatives) that investigates some of the long term outcomes of two Swedish Centre of Excellence programs funded by Vinnova, Sweden’s Agency for Innovation.

My research interests are situated in the borderlands between the sociology of scientific knowledge, and research policy analysis. I am particularly interested in connections between the social aspects (organization, funding patterns, quality evaluation, doctoral training, etc.) and the epistemic aspects of science, i.e. how various ways of organizing the production of knowledge affects the sort of knowledge produced.

In 2018 I defended my thesis in sociology, Disciplined Reasoning. It is a study of how a certain way of thinking and analyzing, a style of scientific reasoning, have come to dominate the discipline of economics in Sweden, and how it has become stabilized within the boundaries of the academic discipline. I am especially interested in how this style of reasoning is reproduced through socialization in doctoral training, and through the boundary work where the disciplinary boundaries are reproduced, against other disciplines and approaches to science, among them heterodox economics. I also show how a transformed practice of scientific quality evaluation is linked to styles of reasoning in an analysis of the increasing reliance of top journal rankings in expert evaluation reports from the recruitment of full professors in economics.
