Research

My PhD project is concerned with Swedish erotic literature from the 19th and 20th Century. The aim of the research project is not to write an all-encompassing historical survey, but instead to focus on different kinds of principal texts and phenomena. The project is thus comprised of a handful of case studies structured in a chronological order, the first being written in 1819. I am interested in how and why sex and desire have been depicted, and under which circumstances. The main focus of the research is the form and themes of the texts, even if they are understood in relation to their historical context (with aspects such as literary circulation, freedom of the press and history of sexuality being of relevance). There is also an ambition to write a part of literary history through these case studies, to investigate if and how it is relevant to think about a tradition of Swedish erotic literature.
