Research

My main interest in research is to understand the metabolism of industrially applied microorganisms. The aim is to optimize fermentation processes for product formation. This includes medium optimization, growth parameter optimization, the use of designed co-cultures, biofilm formation and reactor configuration. A current focus is to understand the deep relation between redox- and energy metabolism in microbial cells growing under anaerobic conditions. Products of interest include hydrogen, ethanol, lactic acid and probiotic lactic acid bacteria cells. My probiotic research is done in collaboration with the SME BioGaia AB.

Teaching

In the 16 years as senior lecturer I have gained vast experience in teaching students at all three cycle levels and in coordinating several graduate and post-graduate courses. I am involved in 5 courses given at my Division and I am a guest lecturer in two other couses. My teaching includes basic microbiology, food microbiology, metabolic engineering, environmental microbiology and designing probiotic products. I coordinate one first level course, one second level course and one third level course.

Societal impact

My expertise is related to projects focusing on environmental issues: towards cost-effective biofuel production from lignocellulosic biomass; and health issues: production of probiotic products (with/without prebiotics) with extended shelf-life.
