Research

I propose an agentive approach to semiotic studies of design within a framework of cognitive semiotics. Semiotics of Design is the study of meaning in the specific field of design professions (industrial design, graphic design, architecture, among others) addressing the way in which designers and users make and share meanings by means of artefacts. My research deals with the following research questions: What is agency? Are artefacts endowed with agency? If artefacts have agency, what kind of agents are they? A data-based study will be conducted with pre-Columbian techniques for artefact-making in Amazonia. The discussion around the notion of agency keeps being an unfinished matter with fruitful implications and it cannot be reduced to overcome the Cartesian dualism.
