My research is focused on vegetation - climate interactions during the last glacial cycle (the last c. 130000 years). Studies of vegetation establishment after the last ice age in subarctic areas (Iceland, Faroe Islands, Northern Scandinavia and Tierra del Fuego), and how vegetation later changed in response to e.g. climate changes, forms one part of the research. The purpose of another part of my research is to investigate if atmospheric CO2 variations during the Holocene (the last c. 11700 years) can be linked to carbon balance changes in vegetation and peatlands. In recent years, I have mainly performed detailed studies of south-Swedish peatlands to better understand how bog vegetation, peat deposition and carbon accumulation is influenced by climatic changes but also by human activity. Common to most of my projects is that they are mainly based on analyses of subfossil plant remains from lake-sediment and peat sequences.
