The main purpose of my dissertation project is to look at why and when migrants adopt change of immigration status (spårbyten) in the pursuit of settlement, in the aftermath of recent migration policy changes in Sweden. The first part of the study examines the drivers behind immigration status changes. In what ways is this a unique policy componenent in Sweden? The study offers an overview of labour migration reform in 2008, its general and specific objectives, and how the unique openeness of the reform can help explain the specific patterns and outcomes of immigration status changes. The second part calls for an examination of the status changers, who they are, and how they respond and adapt to policy changes.
