PhD project: Negotiating problems and solutions in radio counselling

The PhD project is a study of a counselling program on a Swedish radio channel. The program involves conversations on the phone between a psychotherapist and persons (callers to the program), who seek help in dealing with different life difficulties, such as, for instance, difficulties in relations between children and parents or between spouses, or coping with traumatic experiences or anxiety. The study aims to investigate the radio counselling as a particular kind of interpersonal communication aiming at multiple goals, such as providing help and social support, as well as entertaining and educating. The radio counselling is approached as a case of a help-intended relationship that aims to produce explanations and solutions for individual problems. An analytical focus is on the process of negotiation of what constitutes a caller's problem, namely on how a caller's initial description of his or her trouble becomes transformed into a therapeutically informed problem formulation. The research method is ethnomethodological conversation analysis (CA) that allows investigating how conversation participants reach understanding and perform specific tasks and goals through their talk.
