Dr Nicole van der Burg's post-doctoral research is focused on finding and validating biomarkers that differ between single allergic responders (SR) and dual allergic responders (DR) of allergic asthma. Her research includes collecting and assessing airway physiology, airway nitic oxide levels, airway fluid, airway tissue and periferal blood from allergic asthma patients with either known or unknown DRs. Samples are assessed for differences using a wide varitey of techniques including genetic expression, protein levels, cell types and tissue structure. These biomarkers will then be used to further evaluate unknown allergic asthma responders in the hopes to better define both predictive markers of DR and markers that could be targeted to alliviate the late allergic response. Dr van der Burg is passionate in defining predictive biomarkers for DR patients so that they can be significantly more informed on expectations, preventative measures and treatments available.
Dr van der Burg completed her Bachelour of Science in Biochemistry and Genetics at the University of Queensland in 2010. She was then awarded a first class honors in Neuroscience by the Queensland Brain Institute in 2011. Afterwards, Nicole worked for three years in a start up company, Vaxxas, as a Biological Scientist. Following this she completed her PhD at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology in 2019, titled "Reducing allergic airway inflammation with high-density microprojection array skin patches". During which she was awared with the ARC Centre of Excellence in Bio-Nano Science and Technology Travel award in 2017, the European Acadamy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) Congress Travel Award in 2018, the best disscussion presentation at the EAACI congress of 2018 followed by the Australian Socieity for Medical Research (ASMR) International Travel Award.
Dr van der Burg has been a member of ASMR since 2016, the Australasian Society for Immunology since 2017 and of the EAACI since 2018.
