I am working on a two-year project called ‘Sonic Sense of Place: London Grime and Gothenburg Pop, 2000–2020’, which explores the political place-making practices of pop musicians and their audiences. The main output of the project will be a monograph entitled Pop and Politics at the City’s Edge: Protest Music in the Suburbs of London and Gothenburg. This will build on my earlier research on the music of the Swedish indie artist Jens Lekman, applying some of the same methods and approaches to the songs of the British rapper Nadia Rose.

Besides popular music, I have also published research in the fields of urban studies, cultural and historical geography, and the history of ideas. It's fair to say that my scholarly interests are diverse, but all my work is connected by a focus on how the world's geographies are constructed, interpreted and contested. A few themes that feature commonly in my research are:

  • popular culture and technologies of communication
  • vernacular geographies
  • histories of imperialism
  • the movement of people and ideas
  • processes of social and spatial marginalisation
  • urban planning
  • the idea of geographical 'scale'
  • the relationship between the urban and the rural
