Magnetomotive Ultrasound
Due to their small scatter radius, nanoparticles cannot be imaged directly using ultrasound. However, by the use of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs) and an external magnetic field, induced tissue motion in a SPION laden region can be imaged. The potential of the method was evaluated by Maria Evertsson in her doctoral thesis. Sandra Sjöstrand will continue to explore the possibilities and limitations of magnetomotive ultrasound (MMUS), persuing her own doctoral degree under the supervision of Professor Tomas Jansson. Questions that remain to be answered are how the NPs interact with cells, how tissue responce can be normalized over the image plane and what the first clinical application of MMUS will be.
