The aim of this project is to study the microbial community in drinking water systems and in particular water purification biofilms in sand filters and infiltration ponds and correlate the results to drinking water quality and safety. Samples from different spots from sand filters/infiltration ponds will be investigated by next generation amplicon sequencing to identify and exploit microbial biomarkers. These biomarkers will be used to study the microbial ecology of drinking water biofilms and how changes in the microbial communities affect the drinking water quality. A rapid method using flow cytometry to follow and detect changes in bacterial communities is also investigated.
