Research

Sebastian Thöns works as a Professor at the Division of Structural Engineering at Lund University in Sweden and at the BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing in Berlin, Germany.

He has an extensive record of structural and measurement systems research, teaching and engineering. His research and teaching activities are focussed on decision processes and value of information analytics of built environment systems. The areas of his expertise encompass:

  • Value of information and decision analysis,
  • Reliability, risk and resilience of built environment systems,
  • Building and structural health information system design and optimisation,
  • Structural performance design, integrity management and optimisation,
  • Laboratory and in‑situ, static and dynamic testing and monitoring.

He received his civil engineering, structural engineering and doctoral degrees from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany, the University of Manchester, UK, and the ETH Zurich in Switzerland.
