Research

My research interest falls in the extraction, characterization and fungal decomposition of soil organic matter. The main aim of my study is to reveal the mechanisms controlling organic carbon stabilization in forest soils. Recently my research focuses on the decomposition of dissolved organic matter by symbiotic and saprophytic fungi, using traditional (e.g. chemical fractionation, colorimetric measurements of organic matter composition and vibrational spectrometry etc.) and cutting-edge techniques (e.g. gel filtration, Pyrolysis-GC/MS, XPS and synchrotron techniques etc.). Latest results have shown a fungal decomposing process involving both depolymerization and oxidation of initial organic matter.
