Tomas Germundsson, professor of Human geography at Lund University since 2009 and Fellow of the Royal Society of Letters in Lund since 2012. Member of the Pedagogical Academy at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Lund University.

My research interests are primarily within cultural geography, especially landscape studies and historical geography, but also political ecology. I have studied landscape and settlement changes in Sweden and Scandinavia during the period of modernity, ca 1750-1950. Example of research topics are 19th century enclosure reforms, landowning patterns, the landscape of the great landed estates, and the Swedish smallholding movement. I also perform research on cultural heritage and environmental issues in a landscape perspective.

I supervise a number of doctoral students within the field of landscape geography and I have been leading several doctoral courses in cooperation with other departments in the Nordic countries. I teach on all levels on our educational programs, and I am especially fond of excursions and field studies.

Current research projects

I am currently leading the project “Short Memories - Farmer's experiences of the drought in 2018”, focusing on southernmost Sweden.

I am participating in a research group at the Pufendorf institute at Lund University where the aim is to initiate a transdisciplinary platform for knowledge generation and development to advance perennial agriculture in the Swedish context.

I am also leading a project investigating the politics, planning process and landscape changes in connection to the threat of rising sea levels in southernmost Sweden. The project is carried out in cooperation with researchers from the Swedish Agricultural University.
