The concepts and ideas of criminal responsibility is the main focus of my research. My research interests also include the interface between law and philosophy, forensic psychology and psychiatry.

My doctoral study concerns the cognitive prerequisites for criminal responsibility in Swedish criminal law. Focus is on the defendants understanding of, or ”insight” into, the criminal act, a requirement for criminal intent as well as a factor that can be relevant for the choice of sanction. The subject of the analysis is how the concept of understanding is interpreted and applied in criminal law and in forensic psychiatric expert opinions. The aim is also to study how the concept of understanding is related to the concept of accountability, or to the ”insanity defence”, which is not found in Swedish criminal law.
