Audio description and multimodality
Research areas and keywords
Interpreters produce verbal descriptions of visual scenes in order to elicit vivid mental images for the audiences. Audio description has become a very important and challenging area for researchers, educators, interpreters and end users.
• In december 2010, Jana Holsanova (Lund University Humanities Lab) and Cecilia Wadensjö (Stockholm University), organised a first workshop on audio description. The purpose of the workshop was to create a meeting point between different groups to have an exchange on important issues concerning visual interpretation. Among the participants were researchers in interpretation/ translation, cognitive science, interpreters, teachers in audio description and representatives from Syntolkning.nu, National Association of the Visually Impaired and Swedish Braille Authority.
Participants discussed the many practical and theoretical questions, experiences and problems related to the interpretation of visual information for the blind. The participants agreed that research in this field is theoretically interesting, important for syntolkpraktiken and has consequences for users.
• In August 2012, Jana Holsanova, Nils Holmberg and Alexander Strukelj organised a second workshop in visual interpretation in Lund. The focus of this workshop was on methods for recording, analysis and evaluation of audio description - both for educational and scientific purposes.
• A third workshop on visual interpretation is planned for spring 2014.
