Backshoring - Bringing manufacturing back

Project: DissertationIndividual research project

Description

The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence and extent of reshoring in the Nordic industry as well as to analyze the reasons for offshoring and reshoring of manufacturing from and to the Nordic countries. The aim is to create a deeper knowledge of the potential of reshoring as a source of renewal within the manufacturing sector and to establish the state-of-the-art when it comes to reshoring within the Nordic region. The goal is to spread practical and theoretical insights to manufacturing companies, policy makers as well as the research society. The research results can improve business managers and policy makers understanding and provide support when it comes to production location decisions.

Offshoring and reshoring are defined in this study as follows:

Offshoring and reshoring refer to transferring production permanently from one geographic location to another location, either from Sweden to another country (offshoring) or bringing it back to Sweden (reshoring). In both offshoring and reshoring, the ownership of the transferred production may or may not change, referring to simultaneous outsourcing or insourcing of production in connection with the offshoring and reshoring decisions.
