Insect herbivores have profound impact on the biogeochemical cycling in the Subarctic birch forests of Fennoscandia, particularly during outbreak events. However, the many more (background) years between the outbreaks may also contribute significantly to the overall biogeochemical fluxes. In this thesis, we use a combination of field and lab-based techniques to quantify and add perspectives on the insect contribution to carbon and nutrient cycling in a high-latitude ecosystem experiencing rapid climate warming.
