The PhD project concerns English in and outside the multilingual classroom. The learners in focus either recently came to Sweden from another country, or grew up in Sweden, but also speaks an additional language (a heritage language).

The project seeks to investigate how using (a) English only, (b) Swedish and English, or (c) English and a heritage language in the English classroom, affects students' English learning, processing and use. This, in turn, can help establish how to best support both (a) individual multilingual students of English, and (b) pre- and in-service educators working with such learners in the classroom.
