"Followers of the Books"- Islamic and Jewish perspectives on medieval Europe.

Project: Research

Layman's description

Sweden has a weak position in research concerning medieval Islamic and Jewish culture in an otherwise Christian Europe. The aim of our project is to break up the homogeneous blocks that Christianity, Islam, and Judaism appear to have constituted in the Middle Ages. Moreover, we want to integrate Scandinavian history with the history of Southern and Central Europe.

The relation between Christian and Islamic cultures in the Middle Ages is often described in terms of delimited regions, corresponding to a Catholic Europe and an Arab Muslim area. Discussions about cultural interaction are consequently often limited to geographic points of intersection, such as the Crusades in the Levant. This project, however, has a starting point in other perspectives, namely the large Christian and Jewish populations in Muslim dominated territories, as well as Muslims and Jews in Christian Europe. There was mutual influence between all three communities; Muslims and the two “People of the Book”, as the adherents of the Muslim faith called the Abrahamic religions.

The project “Followers of the Books” – Islamic and Jewish perspectives on medieval Europe will focus on some points of intersection where the interaction between the three religiously coloured spheres of culture becomes visible, but within the territory today defined as Europe. Focus is on culture rather than
religion. Mats Roslund investigates Sicily and southern Italy in the Islamic period. Anders Andrén examines the Jewish diaspora in Europe, and representations of Jews in Central Europe and Scandinavia. The third area is covered by Mohammad Fazlhashemi, who who studies Islamic literature brought to Sweden in the Middle Ages, in particular the materiality of the books, their contents, and the contexts in which they were used.
