Mobile gamma spectrometry in contaminated regions of Belarus
In collaboration with the institute for radiobiology in Gomel (www.irb.basnet.by) and the institute for radiation hygiene in Sankt Petersburg (www.niirg.ru) I have performed measurements with a mobile gamma spectrometry system based on a LaBr3:Ce scintillator placed in a backpack. The purpose is to study the possibility of using such system in contaminated, and de-contaminated, regions. The detector has both advantages and disadvantages in comparison to the more common NaI(Tl) detector. The resolution is better but the crystal contains impurities that causes a constant background. The mobile system provides a possibility for mapping the radioactivity with good spatial resolution and create a mean value over a larger area.
