We are working to exploit results from the Gaia space astrometry mission to enhance our understanding of the dynamics of stellar clusters. In order to understand systematic effects caused by the observation process we will first construct a cluster forward modelling tool. Based on the AGISLab program, developed at Lund observatory, it will simulate the process of observing stellar clusters with Gaia. We will use this tool for two projects. First, we will develop and verify an algorithm to find stars that have recently escaped from stellar
clusters, and apply it to data from the third Gaia early data release. This will
provide a probe of clusters' recent dynamical history that is independent of
their current state. Secondly, we will use the forward modelling tool to
compare the detectability of astrometric binaries in open clusters with those in
the field. This will allow us to make an unbiased comparison of the different
binary populations using Gaia data.
