Exclusion as Societal Progress
Abstract
Societal progress is commonly conceived of in terms of inclusion. As societies become more open and inclusive, they are seen as progressive and morally good. In this paper, we do not dispute this picture, but we argue that exclusion can also be important for societal progress and that the picture needs to encompass this dimension as well. Exclusionary practices are normally considered to be bad, but examples we provide illustrate that such practices can be good for society. We argue that an appropriate picture of societal progress should not conceive of the inclusion/exclusion divide as a dichotomy where the first is always good and the other always bad.
