Titel Responsibility and Joint Action
Person och roll
Beskrivning Abstract: It is commonly assumed that there is a relation between responsibility for harms such as global warming, overfishing or skin cancer cases caused by the depletion of the ozone layer and group action. In an individual context, such reasoning is pretty straightforward. The rough idea would be that I am responsible for what I did. The equally rough counterpart in a group setting would be we are responsible for what we did. Thinking this way, it seems essential to give an account of group action in order to explain responsibility for harms such as the ones mentioned. However, responsibility for these harms cannot be explained in terms of group actions for the simple reason that they are not brought about by group action. By considering some of the currently most influential accounts of group action and group responsibility – primarily the accounts of Michael Bratman, Margaret Gilbert and Christopher Kutz – I will show that these accounts cannot assign responsibility for harms of the mentioned kind.
