My main research interest is to explore the mechanism of host-pathogen interactions during an infection. This interaction most often involves protein-protein interactions, which by current understanding are best explored by hybrid methods in structural biology and mass spectrometry.
My current research is focused on newly identified virulence factors of the Streptococcus pyogenes bacterium and their interactions with proteins in human plasma and saliva, with the overall aim to gain deeper understanding of the transition from mild to severe and invasive streptococcal disease. The main methods I apply to study this include affinity-purification and quantitative mass spectrometry, structural mass spectrometry (crosslinking and hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry), electron (cryo) microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.
