Development of a neutron detector array for the characterization of spent nuclear-fuel elements

Projekt: Forskning

Beskrivning

For the permanent storage of spent nuclear-fuel elements, an in-depth understanding of their composition and activity is essential. However, due to their strong radiative field, many direct investigative methods are unsuited. By measuring the emitted neutron radiation, the fissile activity can be deduced. For this purpose, LU is developing a specialized neutron detector array that can handle the harsh radiation environment and give insights into the characteristics of individual spent fuel elements.
The project is carried out in collaboration with Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB (SKB), Vattenfall and Uppsala University.
