Exercise rehabilitation in heart failure - the interplay between cardiac function and skeletal muscle metabolism
Heart failure is not only a matter of the heart. Skeletal muscle fibers and mitochondria are also affected. Exercise as treatment has been shown to increase quality of life and decrease hospitalization in these patients, but the mechanisms to the increased exercise tolerance is incompletely understood. This projects is a unique collaboration between the Cardiac MR Group, Mitochondial Medicine and the Department of Cardiology at Skåne Unviersity Hospital Lund where patients undergo a 16 week exercise rehabilitation program and cardiac function, skeletal muscle fibers and mitochondria are assessed before and after the exercise intervention. By understanding the mechanisms to why exercise works, exercise as medicine can be used at individually targeted doses as we do with pharmacological drugs today.
