Real-time controller of the electrical fields in the cavities that accelerate protons in the ESS linac.

Populärvetenskaplig beskrivning

The European Spallation Source (ESS) will hurl protons at 96% of the speed of light at an 11 ton rotating tungsten target, creating neutrons used for scientific research. The beam of protons will reach a peak energy of 125 MW just before it collides with the target. To accelerate protons a 600 m long linear accelerator (linac) containing high power electrical fields is used. Amplitude and phase of these fields need to be controlled with absolute precision. At the heart of the control is an FPGA. The FW for this FPGA is design by me.
