Beskrivning

The PhD project is a study of a counselling program on a Swedish radio channel. The program involves conversations on the phone between a psychotherapist and persons (callers to the program), who seek help in dealing with different life difficulties, such as, for instance, difficulties in relations between children and parents or between spouses, or coping with traumatic experiences or anxiety. The study aims to investigate the radio counselling as a particular kind of interpersonal communication aiming at multiple goals, such as providing help and social support, as well as entertaining and educating. The radio counselling is approached as a case of a help-intended relationship that aims to produce explanations and solutions for individual problems. An analytical focus is on the process of negotiation of what constitutes a caller's problem, namely on how a caller's initial description of his or her trouble becomes transformed into a therapeutically informed problem formulation. The research method is ethnomethodological conversation analysis (CA) that allows investigating how conversation participants reach understanding and perform specific tasks and goals through their talk.

Populärvetenskaplig beskrivning

The PhD project is about a Swedish radio program, in which a psychotherapist (radio psychologist) talks to people (callers to the program), who seek help in dealing with different life difficulties, such as, for instance, difficulties in relations between children and parents or between spouses, or coping with traumatic experiences or anxiety. The radio program is an example of radio counselling, that has multiple tasks, such as to provide help and support for both callers to the program and the program listeners as well as to entertain and educate the listening audience. The study’s aim is to investigate how these multiple tasks are achieved in the radio conversations through talk. The focus of analysis is on how the radio psychologist and callers to the program talk to each other to discuss possible explanations and solutions for the callers’ problems, as well as on how radio listeners are involved into the problem discussions through the program’s Internet forum.
