Beskrivning

Osteoarthritis in one of the most disabling diseases in the world, and in Sweden it is the most common joint disease. Approximately 1 in 4 persons above the age of 45 has a diagnosed osteoarthritis, but there is currently no disease-modifying treatment. Osteoarthritis is characterized with a degradation of the cartilage in the joint causing exposure of the bone surface, which causes pain and lack of function of the joint. Our group has previously showed that patients with osteoarthritis often develop a degeneration of the meniscus, and that patients with a meniscus tear has a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis. In order to increase the knowledge about this association we want to analyse human menisci with proteomics, and see if we can find any protein differences between healthy and diseased. Larger knowledge about the disease process can help us develop disease markers that could improve the diagnostics. This could lead to earlier diagnosis.

Populärvetenskaplig beskrivning

Osteoarthritis is a common and disabling disease, that causes pain and decreased joint function. In osteoarthritis the cartilage in the bone is degraded, and it is not known why. The are no during treatments today, and there is no way to diagnose the disease in an early stage. It has also been seen that there is a connection between osteoarthritis and injuries of the meniscus in the knee. We want to learn more about this connection, and hopefully find differences between healthy and sick. This can, in the future, improve diagnostics and perhaps also treatments.
