The project considers the mechanical behaviour of CLT, with focus on shear. For new applications and challenging design situations, it is of utmost importance for engineers to have access to accurate and rationally based design methods. The orthogonally layered composition of CLT results in very complex stress states and many failure modes need to be considered in design. Shear, both along and perpendicular to the grain (rolling shear), in the laminations and over the glued areas joining the laminations, is particularly challenging and further research is needed. This mode of loading arises in several global loading situations and is specifically pronounced in the vicinity of geometric irregularities, such as holes and notches. The project consists of development of numerical models using FEM and experimental tests. The aim is to contribute to the knowledge of the structural behaviour of CLT and hence facilitate its use in modern, sustainable construction.
