Vilken nytta har man av rollatorer och elektriska rullstolar?

Projekt: Forskning

Beskrivning

Rollators and electric wheelchairs are common aids to support people with impaired walking ability. Knowledge of the benefit the users have from their devices is insufficient, however. The project sought to investigate the usefulness of the devices from the user's point of view. The studies were conducted in Denmark; the majority of the participants were older people. The results show that the users made frequent use of their devices and were satisfied with them, which means that providing this kind of devices is important for both the user and society as a whole. The results also show that some those who used rollators (especially women) had problems handling their devices. Those who used electric wheelchairs reported that the device could not be used for everything they wanted to do, and some users were not wholly satisfied with the service and follow-up. It was also found that obstacles in the physical environment often limited the users' participation in society, despite the assistive devices. The results are of great value for quality development in the provision of assistive devices and occupational therapy interventions. The project also led to significant methodological and conceptual development; "mobility-related participation" is the foundation for coming studies in the field (see NAME).
The project has been concluded and reported in a doctoral dissertation by Åse Brandt defended in February 2005.
