The Practice Approach in Practice: :Lessons for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) that work towards sustainable food consumption

Abstract

Food consumption account for a significant portion of Swedes’ contributions to environmental problems such as climate change, and thus it can be argued that these patterns need to change. Social scientists have developed practice theory partially in response to a perceived overemphasis on ecological information, values, and attitude change in changing individual behaviour. Applying a practice-based analytical framework to data from interviews with Swedish civil society organizations (CSOs), the researchers aim to elucidate practice theory’s potential and limitations when applied to CSOs’ promotion of sustainable food consumption.The analysis suggestst hat such societal changes necessitate increased integration and coordination of activities not just among CSOs but among all or nearly all actors in society.However, focusing on particular practices,practice elements,and communities of practice are particularly promising strategies for CSOs. Finally, the paper briefly outlines avenues for further research.
