Abstract: How have museum spaces contributed to re-narrate Turkish-Islamic nationalism during past decades? How do representations of the past and patronage of traditional Islamic arts intersect with (established and newly invented) ritual celebrations, occurring in public space and education? And what does such tendencies suggest about the theorisation of the interface of Islam and politics in contemporary society – in Turkey and beyond?
In this talk, Torsten Janson will share findings and theoretical reflections resulting from his current research on Islam, politics, and memory spaces in Turkey.
