How can we Measure Sexual Satisfaction? Lessons From Translating and Using a Standardised Self-Report Instrument

Beskrivning

Sexual satisfaction is an important part of sexual health, but there are currently no composite measures of sexual satisfaction available in Swedish. The New Sexual Satisfaction Scale – Short form (NSSS-S) is a 12-item instrument for measuring two dimensions of sexual satisfaction: Ego-Centred and Partner- and Activity-Centred satisfaction. We translated the NSSS-S to Swedish and assessed its psychometric structure and semantic and cultural appropriateness. Additionally, we conducted a cross-cultural comparison between levels and predictors of sexual satisfaction in Sweden and in Spain.
The NSSS-S was translated into Swedish using back-translation. A survey including the NSSS-S, a single-item measure of sexual satisfaction, measures of self-compassion, body appreciation, body awareness, and demographic questions was conducted with a Swedish (N = 475), and a Spanish (N = 281) online convenience sample. To assess semantic and cultural validity of the translation, NSSS-S items were additionally asked in an open format within 20 semi-structured interviews.
The Swedish NSSS-S displayed good psychometric properties, convergent validity, and the translation had appropriate semantic and cultural validity. Qualitative evaluation of the NSSS-S was favourable but included critique of the questions being insensitive to situational and temporal variation. There was a higher level of Ego-centred satisfaction among Spanish respondents but no other effects of country. Predictors for both types of sexual satisfaction were body appreciation and an interaction between age and relationship status. Results indicate that the NSSS-S can be used to measure sexual satisfaction in Swedish speaking populations for research and clinical assessment.
