Panel “AI, Automated Technologies and Socio-legal Issues”

Abstract

Recent development in autonomous technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly mundane in peoples’ lives, via smartphones, webpages and interactive chatbots. This means that many of the classic socio-legal questions of fairness and justice, equality and access to public sector services are played out in an increasingly automated environment. At the same time, while AI and automated decision-making can solve certain issues and offer efficiency and scalability, these sets of technologies are often inherently non-transparent in how they operate, which can blur accountability for flaws, and may also not only replicate but also amplify social inequality (Eubanks, 2018; Larsson et al., 2023).

This session therefore is set to probe socio-legal issues of fairness and justice in light of AI and autonomous technologies. What social practices are changing that require attention from socio-legal scholars? How do AI and autonomous technologies affect peoples’ life worlds, for example as citizens, patients or consumers? To what extent are established laws – be it on discrimination, privacy or liability – fit for AI-enabled practices, and to what extent are new regulations required, such as the Artificial Intelligence Act in the European Union?
