Research seminar in Book History: The Geographies of Enlightenment Edinburgh

Aktivitet: Föredrag eller presentationPresentation

Phil presents his new book The Geographies of Enlightenment Edinburgh (Boydell 2022), which is based on the sales records of an Edinburgh bookshop between 1770 and 1810. He combines Intellectual History and Book History when analysing the thousands of urban plans, county surveys, travel accounts and encyclopaedias that were bought by diverse groups and institutions including moral philosophers, silk merchants, ship’s surgeons, slave owners, subscription libraries and high schools. Using book-historical sources and methods, Phil shows how the making of Edinburgh as a powerful Enlightenment capital depended on a series of spatial processes that extended across urban, regional, national and global scales.
