Beskrivning
This talk forms part of an exploratory conversation between us that emerged in the late 2010s in response to the re-emergence and/or consolidation in a number of countries, including India, the UK and the US, of racial nationalist regimes working within a neoliberal economic paradigm. Music’s importance as a medium of resistance to such trends in the past and present is illustrated by each of us through publicly available online music videos, reference to academic literature, our own biographies, and, in the case of Moushumi, live performance. Music is likely to include Moushumi’s own compositions in Bengali, songs from street protests against India’s Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019-20 in a number of languages, and Yiddish songs of protest against early twentieth century capitalist exploitation and mid-twentieth century fascism.
